Why Rats!

A world wide obsession?

I have no doubt in my mind why I love rats as pets but read what some other rat lovers say about their wonderful furry friends.

my Freeze

 Cathy, Connecticut, USA

Why Rats?

I started on a whim -- I saw a cute rat in a pet store and took her home.  By that night I realized how special she was and I've been hooked ever since.

How many rats currently?

Three, hopefully getting 2 more soon.

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

Rats are just so TAME.  They don't run away from you, they don't try to escape, they want to be WITH you!  They are clean, smart, funny, loving -- a perfect pet!

What is the least thing you like about rats?

They get sick so often.  And their life span is so short.

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

Well, dogs will always be my favorite pets.  But, much to my surprise, I actually like my rats better than my cats.  Rats are sort of like tiny little dogs.  They are friendlier than cats and they want to be with you, like a puppy.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

I'm in the process of building a hobby room, which includes a HUGE playground for the rats!  I'm constantly trying to improve their home and play areas.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

I was going to a Halloween party.  I wanted to bring the rats, so I dressed up like a bag lady.  I wore the ugliest clothes I could find, I put on a TON of make-up, I even blacked out a couple of my teeth.  Then I teased my LONG black hair into a huge, awful knot.  Before I walked into the party I put Tippy, who was mostly black, on my shoulder.  For the first few minutes no one noticed her.  I went up to the buffet and was filling my plate when someone saw Tippy's tail.  She screamed "Is that a SNAKE??"  Of course everyone looked at me -- and right then Tippy stuck her head out from under my hair!  The reaction she got was GREAT!!  Half the people screamed and ran, the other half went "AWWWW!"  Then everyone had a big laugh.  My costume was a HUGE success!

Cathy "the bag lady" and Tippy

Rats don't live long but they bring so much joy in their short lives, that they are worth the sadness of losing them.  I can't imagine my life without rats.

Why Rats?

Rats chose me.  A wild baby rattus was caught by a cat on my front porch and I rescued her.  This was my introduction to rats.  I truly believe little Ikeola was sent to be in my life and initiate profound changes.

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

They are such characters and always make me smile.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

 The short life span

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

They are very much like puppies that never grow up.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Prepare fresh veggies/fruits nightly.  Buy them toys & hammocks.
Always on the look out for something they might like.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

When Monkey can't climb into the trash bag, she jumps straight into the air and lands inside!

Because of my rats I have made some wonderful friends Worldwide. One of my rat owner friends has drawn me into her artist group.  My work will be part of an exhibition which will be shown in several galleries this fall.
Because of my rats I've found a focal point for my jewelry making.
Because of my rats I've focused my love for animals and become actively involved with animal rescues.
Because of my rats my life is enriched.

These positive things would never have happened without them!

Thank you my Ikeola- RIP Momma's baby :*)

 Why Rats?

I've wondered about that myself. I mean, why I got rats in the first place. But now that I have them, I have no inclination of giving up. They seem to be perfect for me - in how much attention they need, what they give in return, how much money it takes, how much room it takes. Any aspect I can think of.

 How many rats currently ?

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

I can have several! In the same cage. :) Their life span is long enough to give me countless memorable moments to remember and when they pass I can give a home to another little buddy. So over the course of my life, I will have many-many good friends to remember.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

The fact they aren't litter trained. Makes me clean the shelves twice daily. I know, I should have trained them.

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

Haven't had a dog and won't take one. Not enough room or money or time. We have two cats, though, so I can say the cats are more aloof, living their own lives, while the rats seek me out during free range. I know that may be entirely a question of personality in pets. I am quite comfortable with the current set-up.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Shop for baby food, fruits. Set up a digging box with seeds and replace that every 3 weeks. Wash rat laundry of cut-up jeans they like in their nests. Read online about rat care.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

I tried, on suggestion, toilet paper as bedding. Cleaned out the cage, rolled two rolls of TP into the cage bottom. Rearranged cage as usual. Half an hour of furious activity later, all the toilet paper was piled on
a shelf. Some content noses showed from the pile. "Thanks, mum! Let's do that again!"

It's always fun to see them stash stuff, both edible and whatever's not nailed down.

Rats may not be the pet for everyone. But out of the many small companion animals, I'd tell people to give them a try. My experience with rats has been positive. I'll stick with them. They do provide me the companionship I need. And in some senses, they are more exotic than any pet that's hot for just a moment.
PS. And their tails are just nice. Nobody who compares their tails to worms has had a good look at a worm.

Why Rats:

If you love dogs, you'll love rats: they're smart and affectionate!

How many rats currently?

 3

Best thing:

You can teach them how to live with you: come when you call, use a litter box, make parfaits.

Least thing:

 Short life span

Dog/cat comparison:

They have the best of both: like dogs, they're smart and affectionate.  They like people and want to be with them, they're not stand-offish.  Like cats, they're clean, can learn to use a litter box, don't have to be walked, and you can leave them alone for the weekend.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Share my dinner with them, give them the time they wish to interact with me: scratch them, etc.  Give
them free range time to walk around as they wish and have adventures.

Most humorous:

Unlike hamsters, you won't lose a rat.  If he escapes in the middle of the night, he'll wind up jumping into bed with you!

I've even kept orphaned un-releasable wild rats in captivity!  I'll always have rats!  I love 'em!

 Ick Rat

Donell (Moca) North Carolina,USA.

 Why Rats?

They are very loving and affectionate. Their dog-like personalities are the most amazing. My rats know their names and come when called. Run to greet and and lick me just like a dog would. They make sounds that indicate they are happy, the rodent equivalent of purring. They love to be petted and seek me out for attention.

 How many rats currently ?

 Five males.

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

Their personalities and willingness to bond to their owners.
They are smart, loving, cuddly and charming.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

Their short life span and medical problems. Urinating in their bedding and marking everything with urine. Sugar gliders do this as well.

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

They are far more interactive and attentive to humans than cats...They are like owning very small dogs. I find that they compare very much with dogs and prefer them to dogs. They can be litter box trained and they don't bark...A definite plus as far as I'm concerned.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

I cook special omnivore meals for them and freeze the food in ice cube trays. I'm always looking for special items that be converted to being used by rats.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your
 rats?

Once These now departed rats were playing. There was a small cardboard box with a lid that closed like a chest I had in their play area. Dustyroo climbed into the box...BB comes along, and climbs onto the top, which closed the lid. DR realizes he's trapped and tried to push upward to get the lid open, but BB is sitting on it. What does BB do? He starts to groom himself! meanwhile, Ds is frantically trying to get the lid up. Finally, BB finishes his toilet and ever so casually climbs down. Dustyroo springs out of the box and goes for BB. They roll around wrestling and knock the box over. They reminded me of little kids playing, for that is exactly what they were doing. It was a delight to see.

I have seen extremely touching and tender deeds preformed by these animals, not just towards each other, but towards me as well. You would not think a rat would be capable of empathy and compassion, but they are.

Clivia, Switzerland  ( http://www.mousini.com)

 Why Rats?

Because they are the most interesting domesticated animals ever.
Rats are clever, they form a tight bond with their humans, they keep their independence like cats. Every rat has her/his own character, you don't get two rats that are the same. They can be kept in an apartment and don't need to be taken outside on a daily basis like dogs for instance. Rats are very
social and a joy to watch in groups. And last but not least: I rescue rats, that means I take in these wonderful animals that nobody wants. Rats still have a bad reputation and lots of people save cats and dogs. We need more people to discover the beauty of rats.

 How many rats currently ?

sadly only one survivor of my group: Shrek

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

Their enthusiasm.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

I find it hard to cope with the many diseases rats can suffer from.

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

I prefer them to both. Rats are more involved in our lives than cats and if they are kept in groups, they don't need the same level of attention like dogs. I often refer to rats as a cross between cats and dogs, only smaller.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Bought a huge, expensive ubercage. Don't go on holidays unless all my rats are in top condition and can easily be supervised by a person who has my trust. Try to learn as much about pet rats as possible on the net and elsewhere.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

Really funny was the time when Ffiona in her enthusiasm fell out of the ubercage did an amazing somersault in the air and softly landed on the cushion I had put there to prevent accidents. I gave her 10/10 for that one.

I love them all :)

John Bailey Living in SE London

 Why Rats?

Partly by accident. About 12 years ago, my ex girlfriend decided to bring home a male rat from a rescue near where she worked. I wasn't too sure about it at first, but he took about one night to become part of the family.
Pepper was a rat that refused to be ignored. When we split up, she got custody of him.

A few years later, I convinced a neighbor's son to get rats instead of a snake, and after his parents got tired of looking after his pets, I inherited them. I've always tried to get rescue rats where possible. The
current two are a pair of Dumbo girls from someone who raised them very well. We bonded within hours and they are incredibly friendly little creatures. They adore meeting new people and are very good about going to bed when its time.

 How many rats currently ?

 Two female Dumbos.

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

The amazing variation in personality and their willingness to be friends with an animal so many times bigger than them.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

 Their short life spans.

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

Living in a flat, they are much more practical. They don't foul pavements, bring dead animals as gifts, keep the neighbours awake at night, etc. As far as the relationship is concerned, they are as easy if not easier to get close to than a cat or dog.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Share food, allow my couch to be used as cover for an out of cage nest, have the air cooler pointed more at them than me during the summer, decide on furniture and appliances based on their needs and the possibility of the object in question becoming chewed or used as a hiding place for stubborn rats.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

Watching one rat steal a bit of paper from the other's nest, and her sister bouncing after her trying to get it back.

Rats are incredibly rewarding companions. Like with anything else, you get out what you put in. They live such a short time, but they pack every minute of life they can into this. And leave such wonderful memories behind.

Why Rats?

When I was 2 years old (story told by my Mum) I was found in the kitchen by my Mum playing with a rat in the middle of the kitchen floor, looking up at Mum I said in a big loud voice "CAT" since then I've been fascinated by them wild or tame

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

The things they get up to. You wake up and you wonder what they have been up to during the night!! Watching them pull four sheets of kitchen towel up the ladder in one go is hilarious. Also the respect they have for one another after the pecking order has been sorted out, they battle with each other but within five minutes they're curled up to each other sound asleep. People really need to look at rats and the way they live might learn a thing or two

What is the least thing you like about rats?

Cleaning there cage out and Myco and the problems it goes with it.

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

Answer: Having cats and dogs they are lower maintenance than them but still require a fair bit of work as with any animal really, but they are more fun to watch, cats and dogs are usually asleep by the time rats come out to play, they are better watching than the TV

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Health checked everyday, to spot problems and get them sort ASAP as rats health can go down hill very very quickly. They get more treats than the cats or dogs, with fresh fruit and veg and they get out to play more than the cats and dogs.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

When I first got my first agouti boy who was neutered decided to sleep in a large coffee jar I had in for the girls to play in, he crawled in and wedged himself in there, he looked like pickled rat. I was convinced that there was no way on this planet he would get out of it, it took choccy and a straw to get him out, he got out himself after I pushed small bits of choccy up the inside of his belly to his nose, it was like a bullet coming out a gun watching him come out that jar. THE JAR WAS REMOVED AND BINNED WHEN HE CAME OUT IT.

My Mum and Dad are now scared of rats, and won't even look at one in a cage that's been to the vets with me.
If you want a seat at the vets at a busy time take in an Agouti Boy full grown, your guaranteed any seat with touching distance of him, and a few people with a paler complexion after see him.  This has happened to me every time I take one of my boys in.

Why Rats?

I started off with mice as a teenager. After they left us i got my first rat Jasper. I wouldnt     change back for the world. They are the greatest pets.

How many rats currently?

I currently have 15 rats. 4 girls- heidi, chippy, miss sox and abbey. 11 boys- tyson, remus, chev, jett, cooper, enzo, jack, kairo, eRatic, bailey and nitro.

What is the best thing you like about rats as a pet?

They are like a mini human beings, they are smart, fun and gorgeous. They love cuddles and kisses. You can see the love they have for you in their eyes. They cant wait for you to come back home when you leave and are always there to greet you. They are my companions and my best friends.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

Their life span. Loosing a rat is the hardest. For being in your life for only a short time they impact it like they have been with you for 20 years. I lost one of my favourite boys last year. Nos wasn't just a rat to me. He was my best mate. I got very attached to him and when he died I felt like I couldn't go on I loved him so much and him not being there with me anymore was too much to bear at one stage and I still miss him so much to this day..

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

They are better then cats and dogs to a extent they are low maintenance lower cost (sometimes) plus they are never mad or grumpy at you, like my cat can be. Most rats I know have more intelligence then a cat or dog anyway lol.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

ummm.. Well they are usually fed better then me. Plus they always have dessert, sometimes I will be late for work because I am making them breakfast and I go to work hungry  lol. I think the best thing I do for my rats is just being there for them, treating them special. I could never hurt any animal so being the best rat mum I can be is the main thing.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

I have had so many happy / humorous events with my rats. My Nos used to wrestle like mad under the bed sheets, he would go crazy, he would lick you then lightly nip you then run away then quickly bound back. He also had the best waddle, he was a big squish so him walking and bounding away was
always so cute and funny to watch. My four boys I bred are funny they are mad boxers I put a apple core in there cage last night, just one! With four rats! You can imagine the havoc I caused they were all trying to get it. It was so funny to watch.
Nos

No amount of words can describe the way I love my rats. They are all so much a part of my life without them I'd be lost. Each rat is so different. They each have there own special personalities...rats are the greatest pets. They will give you a lifetime worth of love and happiness. I'm sure I will have rats up until the day I die  lol..

 Why Rats?

Can't remember. I think friends at school had rats and I thought they would be a nifty pet (says Emma).

 How many rats currently ?

19 (16 and three quarters, really...........if you count the new babies!)

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

They're good for de-stressing. It's hard to stay annoyed or worried when they are being naughty or funny...........they keep you alert!

What is the least thing you like about rats?

Nothing is truly rat-proof.

They like to sleep on their backs, completely still. I'm sure they do it deliberately.
The girls ALWAYS tip their milk over! It drives us CRAZY.

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

CLEANER. Who would ever kiss a cat or dog belly?. More portable.. ever tried putting a doberman on your shoulder? If 15 of them jump on you, you don't get crushed (unlike with dogs)

Their food smells better!

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Buy them special friends!

There so fun, cuddly and cheer you up when you have a bad day.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

There a real distraction when you trying to work (but I don't think its a bad thing really?)

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

I think they are just like dogs but smaller.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

When my mams not looking they get to eat of my plate. My mam doesn't like my rats

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

I got my new rats Flash and Bailey. I has them out playing on the bed with the other and Flash just decided all of a sudden to launch himself off my window sill. I had to dive of the bed to catch him and he gave me a look to say "what's the problem?"

I love them to bits and would never be without them. When I get my own house I'm having more!!!!!!! Their the best!    As everyone knows RATS backwards is STAR

Why Rats?

They are affectionate, sociable, and for the most part self sufficient.

How many rats currently?

11.

What is the best thing you like about rats?

How they interact with one another and humans.

How do they compare with other pets like cats and dogs?

I find they are similar in some ways, they show unconditional affection  like dogs and are self sufficient like cats.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Indulge them in every sort of color and style hammock they want to cram into.

Provide them with all sorts of toys and amusing objects to play in and around.

Buy them all sorts of goodies and treats that they like.

Take them on family vacations. ( and yes they have their own little suitcases)

What is the most humorous event with one or any of your rats?

When one of the boys decide he needed to protect the family from the family cat by becoming "a flying squirrel." and diving off the coffee table to chase him out the room. I don't think I have ever seen my dear old cat run so fast as he did that evening! Naturally we had to praise him for being the hero rat, while comforting the dear old cat who could not understand why he was being chased by a "rat" of all things.

Rats are special creatures, intelligent, affectionate, endearing and fun loving. They wrap themselves around your heart and are forever intertwined.

Caring for pet rats should never be taken lightly for they are truly special.

 Why Rats?

Reading about other people's rats on the internet made me want rats for myself.  It wasn't only because they're cute... what really sold me was their personalities and cheekiness and sense of fun.
They're such intelligent and interactive pets.

 How many rats currently ?

Five boys - Rumpus (agouti hooded), Schnapps (agouti self),
Lamington (black berkshire), Scrambler (mink berkshire),
Grub (mink bareback)

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

Their amazing individual personalities, their intelligence, and their humour.  They're awfully cute and fuzzy too.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

Their unfortunately short life span.  Oh, and when they tread in a squishy raisin before climbing down your shirt.

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

Rats are like dogs in that they offer companionship and demand attention 24/7.  But when it comes to cleanliness and scritching lap pet appeal, they're more like cats.  Rats are much more entertaining and stress-relieving to watch than fish, more beautiful than any bird, and are the most intelligent and interactive of all the small animals.   So rats have the combined best character traits of most common pets all in one small adorable package.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Anything they want or need and some things they haven't even considered.  I like to ensure my rats are constantly entertained, challenged, spoilt and, above all, feel loved.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

How can I offer just one???  Here's lots to choose from:

The Naughty Nimbus Narratives:

Ratty anecdotes:

They're hilariously naughty little fuzzy beasts... but I wouldn't have them any other way.

Why Rats?

Answer: Because my husband is allergic to cats, and we don't have the time during the day, or the right kind of section for a dog.

How many rats currently ?

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

They sleep while I am at work, they are loving and funny and good entertainment.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

Their short life span and propensity towards respiratory disorders and tumours.

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

 I haven't owned either, so can't make a comparison.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Freeze bottles of water for hot days, buy special grocery items (like yoghurt covered raisins, cook them special things, make them hammocks and cage linen.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

When Jake bit a tube of superglue and stuck his top lip to his teeth.  Obviously not funny at the time, but to look back on it was hilarious (and he was completely unharmed!).

For someone who works all day, rats are great in that they are lively in the evenings and mornings, and because they are confined, you don't have to worry about them being run over by a car while you're at work or asleep!
They are cheeky, funny, loving, naughty and very entertaining.  I could sit and watch them for hours.  They aren't low-maintenance, as their cages need continuous cleaning, and they love to chew all their cage linen, so I am often sewing new stuff or patching it up.  They are very easy to love, which
makes it doubly hard that they have such short lives, in comparison to larger pets.

Why Rats?

My family wasn't much of a "pet" type family.  No cats, no dogs.  Occasionally my father would save a wandering turtle from certain death (crossing a busy road, for example) so we'd have a temporary pet and, when I was older, I did end up becoming mom to an unwanted chinchilla as well as a plethora of guppies, but that was about the extent of it.  Really, I was fascinated with gerbils.  I should have known better:  I used to gerbil-sit my neighbor's gerbils when she was out of town and the wheel made me crazy, but I guess I figured it would be different if they were mine.
Rolling ahead a few years, I met Andy and after awhile we decided to bring some pets into our lives.  I got 3 gerbils and approx. $100 in cages and accessories.  He got 2 female rats (because the boys had those, you know, big parts, and...eww!) and his $10 worth of cages and accessories and we went home.
Going in I neither hated nor loved rats.  I remembered the classroom rat when I was in kindergarten - the guy would always leap from the top of his aquarium onto my shoulder and stick those, you know, big parts...eww... in my face.  But it wasn't a bad experience (or a good experience, really).
Andy's girls (Freud and Skinner) were incredible.  I'd never known that a pet could want to be with you, to spend time with you, to interact with you.  I figured pets were something you watched (in their cages) for fear of having them run loose in the heating system. The rats really changed my views, and in all respects.  Anyway, we went back within the week and I got, for myself, 2 boys (Rattus and
LJB), icky-ewws and all.  And they were the most wonderful friends :o)

How many rats currently ?

28.  12 girls, 14 boys.

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

Everything, really.  I think their furry faces are adorable, of course, but I really don't need to see that in them anymore.  I just see big personalities in little furry packages.  They are my friends, my therapists, my educators.  Everything I know about life, about death, about interaction, about love, about coping...about everything...I learned from rats.
I also love the fact that I can spoil them rotten and they don't gripe about it like the rest of my family does.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

The possibility of 14 surprises...

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

I've never had cats or dogs.  I've had a chinchilla, rabbits, mice, gerbils, birds, and turtles.  I hope to have a dog someday, a very dumb dog that behaves like an oversized rat (without the nibblers).  But I'll still have rats :o)  Rats are, as far as I'm concerned, the epitome of all life forms and the model after which all other life forms should follow.  But, I also think rats aren't for everyone.  If you find yourself giggling inexplicably at some point of any given day, rats are probably for you.  Otherwise, befriend a bird or something - they don't care much for giggling.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Everything?  I've currently got a stinky Durian fruit hogging up 1/3 of my freezer if that helps clear up "everything."  When I eat out, I order something especially for them.  I can't go to a mall without finding a new accessory for their cages.  Everything.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

Every event is a humorous event when it comes to the vermens and verwomens.  And if you refuse to find something funny, they'll run right up to your ear and shove their tickly whiskers in it until you finally give in to fits of laughter.
Case in point:  Slinky, who was sure he was human, would sleep with us, eat with us, follow us, etc.  He was very polite to me (he was my true love), but he thought Andy was both his trampoline and litter pan.  That made Andy very very mad.  So every night he'd wake up and move from his curled out comfy position on my stomach onto Andy, tinkle, tug, and nudge, and Andy would take him, put him
on the floor, and hope that would be the end of it.  I would scold Andy for being so mean to the poor Slinks and Slinky would climb right back up, nip his toe, hop up to his face and shove his nose in Andy's nose, and would then settle back down on my stomach.  That was funny :o)  Of course it made Andy crazy that he was being scolded by the both of us..

Cost less expensive than either cats or dogs.
Feed and space a lot less is required for a pair of same sex rats  don't require licensing.
Are quiet,  can be litter trained  if kept in clean healthy condition have little or no smell and are very > gentle animals when handled and petted at least once a day.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

I am the Facilitator for Brisbane Aussie Rodent Rescue and we Take in Rats  and get them veterinary treatment if required
we make sure they are vet checked and healthy treated for internal and  external parasites prior to re homing  and try to re home as many rats and mice as possible if we have an aggressive buck our first option is neutering.
We also offer on going support for the people who adopt or Foster our  rescues for the life of the rat or mouse.
Above all else ensure they have a certain amount of free range time each day  in a safe environment both rescues and pedigrees.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

Having had friends over for dinner and after dinner sitting on our back deck  having coffee letting some of our girls play on the rat table when a particularly affectionate girl  Min (who absolutely love to shoulder sit)  decided she she would cross mountains (or in this case a mountainous beast!)  to get to my shoulder as it was she crossed  not only my plate, but my dessert and my coffee cup and finally our Rottweiler. (see the photo attached)

Sadly due to ignorance and "Bad Press" Rats have always been maligned as  vermin or pests yet, these wonderful animals that have contributed to developments of treatments for cancer, diabetes, antibiotics etc.
So in my book I say they are Heroes, and if more people took the time out to look at them/learn about them without bias they might find they are truly one of the worlds greatest pocket pets.

Why Rats?

They were the first rodents I ever had as pets, starting age 18.  I was curious about other rodents, but rats had everything I could ask for and more, so I never kept others except as rescues.

How many rats currently ?

13, not including rescues.

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

Oooh!  Physically, their cute whiskery snoots and lovely fur on the rexes especially. They are extremely cuddly for such small fellows   I love their gentle, sensitive personalities, so sweet and vulnerable.  They are so very attentive and loyal, and make interactive and amusing companions.

What is the least thing you like about rats?

Their destructive capabilities.

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

Equally satisfying, but a better choice if you have limited space or unsuitable environment for larger animals.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Cook their food every day.  Shop for toys in thrift shops to build or populate their free range area.

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

My rat Mercedes used to crash card games by dashing onto the scene, stealing cards from the deck, and piling them next to my leg.   She never touched the discard pile, only the deck because she knew we were drawing from there, and was imitating us.  We gave her her own pack of cards while we played, but she wasn't interested in those either.  If you shouted  out her name or pretended to chase her, she'd run to the edge of the sofa, drop the card, then  dance about madly with glee.

Comments you want to make about them.

They can be very high maintenance animals.  If you have a young child who would be heartbroken to lose her pet prematurely to tumors or respiratory disease, do a search on the web and join some forums to get a sense for who the good breeders are, and also information on rat needs.  Bad breeders are just as bad as pet stores and rat mills, and will cheat you by selling unhealthy animals.  Avoid mass breeders, and those who don't ask any questions about the home the rat will be going to.  Observe the rat for a while and make sure it's not sneezing, or displaying red stains around the nose or eyes, and avoid rats with squinty eyes (means sickness).  Eyes should be bulgy/spherical, and round and clear like a bird's.

Healthy young rats rarely sneeze, and sneezes are usually the onset of respiratory disease.   A few sneezes may be normal in older rats if they have had a rough start in life.  Avoid using pine and cedar as bedding because the oils sear the delicate tissue of the respiratory tract and lead to their early demise.  Aquariums have poor air circulation and trap ammonia.  Keep the temperature as consistent as possible, and avoid drafts.

Feed a good quality diet if you want to keep your rat as healthy as possible.  Feed as little extruded foods (blocks, kibble) as possible.  Vitamin enriched "sawdust"  doesn't do the immune system much good, though it's fine to leave in the cage at all times to snack on.

If children are not an issue, and you have a charitable heart and some money to burn, consider saving a life and adopting rescues.  All animals are potentially high vet bills, but rescues are more so because of their unknown origins.  Poorly bred rats may also have hormonal aggression issues, which are often curable with a simple neuter, or possibly spay.  Otherwise, rats rarely bite unless they have been formerly abused or traumatized.  Try giving these guys a chance with patience and trust-training.

Rats are social, and need to live in at least a pair.  A lone rat is a poor eater, depressed and neurotic.  3 is best because a pair becomes so strongly bonded that one often grieves to death if the other dies.  They  also fight more, because they tend to fixate on each other.  A third rat is a mediator!  If you have a pair and one dies, try to introduce a baby.  Adult rats may not be able to be socialized to another adult rat, and even babies require careful introductions over a period of time.

A lot of important up-to-date rat information can be found online.  Make good use of this important resource when starting out, to avoid inadvertently hurting your pets.

Why Rats?

I am on a few pet forums online and I really chat to everyone there. Starting from the mouse fans all the way over to the frog, fish and hamster fans. I was chatting to my friends at the Rat forum one day and, hearing all the great things about rats and seeing all the cute pictures, I got my first two girls- Violet and Merlin.

How many rats currently?

Four. Wallace the beige hooded. Roscoe the black hooded. Vincent the Agouti hooded, and Quinn the Champagne hooded.

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

Rats are wonderful! They are so easy to care for, yet a million times better than something like a goldfish. I find my rats are tamer than my cat! They also want to be with you all the time and they always come up to the side of the cage to say hello!

What is the least thing you like about rats?

Like everyone else, the short lifespan. Also I find it bad how rats are have such a bad reputation when in fact they are absolutely gorgeous and sweet!

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

They are just as loyal as a pet dog, to be honest. Roscoe was being his beautiful self just after 30 minutes at home! I think mice and rats tie, I love them both. Mice for their cuteness, and the rats for being so loyal.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

Cages upon cages! I also burn huge holes in my pockets on these little guys!

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

My two babies, Quinn and Vince were just hopping about as usual. I gave them a tiny taste of a lolly and they went berzerk! Hopping around and tumbling from head to toe!

Rats are beautiful animals and if everyone will just give them a chance, they will soon see the beauty within!

Why Rats?

My boyfriend always used to tell me about a rat he used to have named Kerrigan. One day I was sitting thinking that I would love to buy him something special and surprise him.  The choice was a rat or a dog. I went to the local pet store that afternoon and saw the 2 most beautiful beige hooded rats. Two little brothers. When I decided to take them, the owner of the pet store showed me her back room. She has got a whole room full of rats. And she spoke of each one so lovingly. I knew I had made the right choice getting rats. I love my boys!

How many rats currently?

I have got 2 rats. Danni and Vortex.

What is the best thing you like about rats as pets?

That I can take them with me into the shops. They sit on my shoulders and I can still have my hands free to shop. I also love the fact that even though they are so small, they can show so much affection. Like when I rub Vortex behind the ear and his eyes go half closed with pleasure!

What is the least thing you like about rats?

The sawdust flying out of the cage and lying all over my kitchen counter! And their scrotums!

How do they compare with other pets like dogs and cats?

I find rats very similar to my dogs. They also love getting attention. They know their names and come running across the counter when I call them.

What are the things you do especially for your rats?

When I am preparing dinner I open up their cage and let them roam around on the kitchen counter. They sniff at all the things I am chopping up and know they are welcome to steal themselves a little treat! I put them in their favourite spot outside in the evenings when they most come to life!

What is the most humorous event with any or one of your rats?

We often take our rats grocery shopping with us. Danni on my boyfriends shoulder and Vortex on mine. One day we went to a rather fancy shop, expecting to hear some shrieks and  not so many “aw cutes”. To our surprise, a VERY old little lady spotted Danni peeping out from under my boyfriends hair. We thought she was going to be horrified ... But to our surprise, we were stuck in the store for 20 minutes so that the little old lady could give a little ear rub to Danni. He loved it. I also always remember the time I walked in on them on a very hot day, both sleeping in exactly the same position! (photo)
